Do Brands That Rank on Google Also Show Up in ChatGPT? What a Study Found

Local businesses can use Google visibility as a solid foundation for AI visibility, while checking whether AI systems can read and use the site. A study of 10 laptop brands found that Google keyword visibility and ChatGPT mentions were positively related, but Dell and Apple showed that one measure did not reliably predict the other.
What did the laptop study compare?
The study examined Apple, Lenovo, HP, Dell, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Samsung, LG, and Razer across seven search themes. The themes ranged from broad searches such as “laptop” to use-case searches such as “laptop for gaming” and “laptop for remote work.”
For each brand, the researchers compared the number of Google keywords it ranked for with the frequency of its mentions in AI-generated answers. They then measured the correlation between those two measures. A third-party SEO suite collected the data.
How closely did Google rankings track AI mentions?
The two measures had a positive correlation. The strongest result appeared for the “best laptop” theme, where the correlation was about 0.88. That is a strong statistical relationship for this dataset, but it does not make Google rank a guarantee of an AI mention.
Lenovo, HP, and ASUS led on both measures. Dell ranked for a large number of Google keywords but appeared less often in AI answers covering the same topics. Apple appeared in more AI answers than its keyword count would suggest. Samsung had strong AI visibility overall but rarely appeared in laptop-buying answers.
The “laptop for remote work” theme had weak competition on Google but showed real demand in AI questions. For a local business, that pattern suggests checking buyer questions where established search competitors may be fewer.
Why can a strong local ranking still miss an AI answer?
According to Gen Optima, a brand can rank well because it matches keywords, earns backlinks, and satisfies search intent, while an AI answer engine may still ignore the brand because the information is hard to extract, verify, summarize, compare, or cite.
A separate study of 15 brands across five categories found only about 62% overlap between brands ranking on Google’s first page and brands mentioned by ChatGPT. The correlation between Google position and ChatGPT recommendation order was 0.034 with browsing on and 0.022 with browsing off. The research covered car insurance, credit cards, hotel booking, online courses, and web hosting. These results show that the relationship can be much weaker than the laptop dataset’s strongest 0.88 result.
Another study covering 10,000 finance and SaaS queries found a correlation of about 0.65 between first-page Google rankings and brand mentions in large language models. Top-three Google positions had the strongest relationship in that research. The findings associate search visibility with AI mentions, but they do not prove that one causes the other.
Strong rankings can help a business enter the options an AI system considers, but they do not decide which option the system names.
What signals outside the website matter?
The finance and SaaS research found that traditional backlinks had little influence on ChatGPT mentions in its dataset. Public relations efforts and on-page content could also affect the results, but the research did not establish them as causes.
A larger analysis of 129,000 domains across 216,524 pages in 20 niches found that referring domains were the strongest factor associated with ChatGPT citations. Sites with up to 2,500 referring domains averaged 1.6 to 1.8 citations, while sites with more than 350,000 averaged 8.4. At 32,000 referring domains, average citations rose from 2.9 to 5.6 in the analyzed data.
The same analysis associated several content qualities with citation rates. Articles under 800 words averaged 3.2 citations, while articles over 2,900 averaged 5.1. Pages updated within three months averaged 6 citations, compared with 3.6 for outdated pages. Pages with 19 or more statistical data points averaged 5.4 citations, compared with 2.8 for pages containing minimal data. Consider these figures as correlations in the analyzed data rather than expected results for an individual site.
What does this mean for your website and Google Business Profile?
Keep improving Google visibility with pages that explain the service and the situation in which a customer needs it. For example, a clinic can describe the treatment it provides and the needs it addresses, while a trade can state the location it serves and the problems it resolves. Use clear wording about the service and the customer’s needs.
Seek third-party reviews and comparison coverage on other sites. These mentions may give AI systems more material to understand the brand, although the studies do not guarantee a mention.
Keep the Google Business Profile’s business name, phone number, hours, services, website link, and other details consistent with the website.
How to check your own visibility
Track the Google positions of the pages that matter to the business. SEOScanPro’s Rank Tracker records where pages rank for selected keywords over time. That establishes the Google side of the review without claiming that rank is the same as AI visibility.
Check whether AI crawlers can reach the site. SEOScanPro’s AI visibility report may show which AI crawlers, including crawlers associated with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity, visited the site. A page that an AI system cannot read gives that system less material with which to answer a customer question.
Then check whether an AI agent can complete a basic customer task. The browser-driven check attempts to find information such as a phone number, business hours, and the contact page. This tests the site’s practical usability for an assistant acting on a customer’s behalf.
The free SEO audit may identify technical and on-page issues that can affect how Google and AI systems read the site. None of these checks measures how often ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews mention the business.
What to do now
- Build useful Google visibility. Add or improve pages that answer specific customer questions, such as what the business does, who it serves, and which problems it solves.
- Check crawler access. Review whether AI crawlers can visit and read the pages that contain the business’s services and contact information.
- Test basic customer tasks. Confirm that an AI agent can find the phone number, hours, and contact page without hitting a blocked or unclear page.
- Earn outside mentions. Seek genuine reviews and comparison coverage on other sites, keeping the business details consistent across every source.
FAQ
Does ranking well on Google guarantee a brand will appear in ChatGPT?
No. The study of 10 laptop brands found a positive relationship between Google keyword visibility and AI mentions, with the strongest correlation reaching about 0.88 for “best laptop.” Dell ranked for many keywords but appeared less often in AI answers, while Apple appeared more often than its keyword count would suggest.
Can a business rank on Google without appearing in AI answers?
Yes. A separate study of 15 brands across five categories found about 62% overlap between Google first-page rankings and ChatGPT mentions, while the correlation between Google position and ChatGPT recommendation order was 0.022 to 0.034.
What should a local business check besides Google rankings?
Check whether AI crawlers can read the site, whether an AI agent can find the phone number, business hours, and contact page, and whether third-party sources provide consistent information about the business. These checks address access and practical use without treating an AI mention as a guaranteed result.
