AI Overviews Now Appear on Most Branded Google Searches

AI Overviews now show on more than 80% of branded Google queries, based on two independent datasets published in late September. The shift changes what branded search visibility means, because an AI-generated summary can sit above the page that a brand owns, and the brand may or may not appear in that summary. Marketers who only watch their own rankings for branded terms now have a second layer to track.
What the data shows
Two separate datasets tracked how often Google displayed an AI Overview when a user searched a brand name. Both reached the same conclusion: by the end of September, the rate was above 80%.
DemandSphere, a search analytics platform, found that AI Overviews appeared for 26.12% of the branded queries it tracks on September 1. The rate then climbed unevenly, with a jump to 57.43% on September 18, a drop back to 31.15% the next day, and a sustained rise from September 26 onward. It peaked at 90.48% on September 27 and was at 82.06% on September 29, the last day in its dataset. DemandSphere’s numbers cover all markets and devices, and the company has not disclosed the total number of branded keywords it monitors.
Ahrefs, which limited its view to U.S. desktop results, found AI Overviews on 65.1% of branded keywords in August and 82.91% on September 29. Both datasets converged above 80% by the close of September, though they disagree on the size of the jump.
Independent testing by Nectiv, shared on September 30, found AI Overviews for 93 of 100 enterprise brands checked. Separate testing of multiple brands reproduced the same pattern, with two exceptions: the “Google” search itself and news publications. Similar findings were reported back in July, but the current rate is much higher than it was then. Google has not announced a change related to branded queries, so it is unclear whether the rate will hold, climb further, or pull back.
Why branded AI Overviews matter
AI Overviews are not new, but the surface they now occupy is the most predictable part of the search funnel. Branded queries come from people already looking for a specific company or product, which has historically been a steady source of owned traffic. An AI Overview adds a Google-written synthesis next to the familiar results, which means ranking well for your own brand name no longer tells the whole story about your branded search visibility.
If an AI Overview appears, marketers need to know four things: whether the brand is mentioned in the answer, how Google describes it, which sources support the response, and whether competing brands appear alongside it. Stable rankings with falling click-through rates are now a signal worth investigating on their own.
There is an important limit to the DemandSphere data. It measured whether an AI Overview appeared for a branded search, not whether the brand itself appeared or was cited in the generated answer. The data confirms the rise in AI Overview presence, and a separate question is what those Overviews actually say about the brands they cover.
How to check your own brand
Monitoring branded visibility now means watching both organic rankings and the AI-generated answer that appears above them.
- Identify the branded queries that trigger AI Overviews and compare those results with your organic rankings for the same queries.
- In Google Search Console, filter the Performance report to your branded queries and compare click-through rate for a week before AI Overviews appeared on your brand terms with a week after. CTR is more useful than raw clicks, since branded demand shifts with your own marketing. A useful comparison window is September 8 to 14 against September 29 to October 5, because DemandSphere’s data stayed between 28% and 34% in the first window and rose above 80% in the second.
- Search your own brand name while signed out and read the AI Overview the way a customer would. Note what it says about you, which pages it cites, and whether those pages are still current.
- For each branded query that triggers an AI Overview, check whether your brand appears in the generated answer, which pages and third-party sources Google cites, and whether competing brands are introduced into the response.
A drop in branded CTR with steady rankings is the clearest signal that an AI Overview is now sitting in front of your usual result. Looking only at the top organic position misses that, because the overview can occupy the space above it regardless of where the brand ranks.
What is still unknown
Google has not commented on the change, so the rate of AI Overview presence on branded queries could move again. The two datasets also differ on how steep the climb was, with Ahrefs reporting a higher starting point in August than DemandSphere showed in early September. Tracking presence over the coming weeks will show whether the late-September level is a new floor or another step on a longer climb.
FAQ
How often do AI Overviews appear on branded Google searches?
By the end of September, AI Overviews appeared on more than 80% of branded queries in both DemandSphere and Ahrefs data. DemandSphere measured 82.06% on September 29, and Ahrefs measured 82.91% on the same day.
Does an AI Overview mean my brand is losing traffic?
Not automatically. The data only shows that an AI Overview is present, not that the brand is cited inside it. A drop in click-through rate with steady organic rankings for branded queries is a signal worth investigating.
How can I check whether my brand appears in an AI Overview?
Search your own brand name while signed out, read the AI Overview as a customer would, and note what it says, which pages it cites, and whether competitors appear. For ongoing monitoring, a rank tracker that filters for AI Overview presence and a separate AI visibility report that tracks brand mentions inside generated answers give a fuller picture than rankings alone.
