Nvidia has agreed to acquire the platform, but the deal still requires regulatory approvals.

Nvidia disclosed on September 2, 2026, that it had entered a definitive agreement to acquire Hugging Face. The $12.9 billion transaction includes an approximately $11.9 billion purchase price payable to Hugging Face stockholders, subject to certain adjustments, plus an employee retention program worth up to approximately $1 billion.

An open platform can operate across different infrastructure providers. Businesses can add an AI feature without depending on one hardware vendor.

What does Nvidia gain from acquiring Hugging Face?

Hugging Face gives Nvidia a large distribution channel for open-weight models. According to Nvidia’s announcement, more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use the platform to share more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications. More than 200,000 companies use it to find, evaluate, customize and deploy AI.

The acquisition would give Nvidia access to developers and organizations that may need computing resources for AI workloads. Nvidia expects the acquisition to provide Hugging Face with more computing resources and help developers build, share and deploy open models and applications.

Hugging Face already offers several paid cloud services. According to Hugging Face, Inference Endpoints may range from $0.03 per hour for CPU instances to $80 per hour for clusters of eight Nvidia H100 GPUs. Hosted Spaces are billed by the hour, while Inference Providers route API calls to third-party GPU clouds including Together AI, SambaNova and Groq.

Nvidia and Hugging Face also operate Training Cluster as a Service. It gives platform organizations on-demand access to large GPU clusters, with charges limited to the duration of a training run.

There is also a business reason for Nvidia to absorb unused capacity. Nvidia disclosed $18 billion committed to equity investments through 2027, and it has promised to help cover the cost of tens of billions of dollars in cloud computing agreements with major customers. Hugging Face gives Nvidia access to a developer and enterprise audience that may use that capacity.

Will developers have to use Nvidia hardware?

No. Nvidia says that NVIDIA compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face. The company has also committed to keeping Hugging Face open and supporting multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment.

Compare available AI tools and check the vendor’s current infrastructure terms before choosing a service.

A clinic might use an AI form assistant, a retailer might test a product-recommendation tool, and a trades business might add a knowledge assistant for staff. Review how infrastructure choices may affect uptime, data handling, operating cost and portability if a provider changes.

What will happen to the open ecosystem?

Hugging Face began as a place for researchers to share open-weight neural networks. Its platform now hosts more than 4 million models, and its trending leaderboard helps developers identify models that are gaining attention.

The platform also has expanded beyond the model hub. Hugging Face has 250 employees and has completed six small, talent-driven acquisitions. Its newer businesses include robotics, enterprise storage and edge inference software developed with Qualcomm.

The Reachy Mini is an open-source desktop robot kit priced between $399 and $499. Its predecessor, launched at roughly $100, sold more than 10,000 units, and the company was on track to ship 20,000 during the year.

Microduck, a 25-centimeter open-source biped, has 15 actuators, a camera, speaker, LiDAR, NFC, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It costs $399 and reached more than $2.6 million in order volume after its launch announcement. The robot ships with more than half a dozen pretrained policies and can be trained from scratch with reinforcement learning.

Hugging Face also built a storage system for the petabytes of weights and datasets on its platform. The system is sold to customers managing terabytes or petabytes of data. According to Hugging Face, AI lab Arcee became the first major American company to replace AWS S3 with Hugging Face Private Storage, in a multi-million dollar commercial partnership.

How does this affect a local business website?

Assess whether the tools and infrastructure could support a business’s website or internal operations. Define the intended use case, data-handling approach and way to measure the result before testing or deploying an AI feature.

Hugging Face also reported an experiment in which more than 100 AI agents collaborated on an open project and produced a fivefold inference speedup for Gemma 4 inside vLLM.

For website owners, the useful question is not whether Nvidia owns the platform. It is whether a proposed feature can run on infrastructure the business controls, whether it can move to another provider, and whether the service terms explain how customer or business data is handled.

What is the regulatory status of the deal?

The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions, including required regulatory approvals. It had not closed as of August 29, 2026.

Nvidia has yet to say whether the acquisition requires merger-control review in Europe, according to MLex. The outlet reported that governments across the EU have handed new powers to regulators to catch high-value tech deals.

What to do now

Identify one practical AI use case. Choose a task with a clear result, such as answering common customer questions, assisting staff with product information or reducing repetitive form processing.

Check portability before deployment. Confirm whether the model can be moved between cloud, accelerator and inference providers.

Review data handling. Establish what customer information enters the system, where it is stored, who can access it and how long it is retained.

Compare the full operating cost. Look at API, hosting, storage, support and monitoring expenses rather than treating a low per-request price as the complete cost.

Test before committing. Set a measurable target and run the tool on a limited part of the workflow before expanding it across the business website or internal operations.

FAQ

What is the Nvidia-Hugging Face deal?

Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. The transaction includes an approximately $11.9 billion purchase price payable to Hugging Face stockholders, subject to adjustments, and an employee retention program worth up to approximately $1 billion. It is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.

Will developers need Nvidia hardware to use Hugging Face?

No. Nvidia says its compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face. According to Nvidia, developers will still be able to choose their models, frameworks, clouds, inference providers and computing platforms.

What does Hugging Face sell besides open-weight models?

Hugging Face offers cloud inference, hosted Spaces, third-party inference routing, enterprise blob storage and subscriptions. According to Hugging Face, it also sells the Reachy Mini robot kit for $399 to $499 and the $399 Microduck biped robot, while developing edge inference software with Qualcomm.

This article reports on publicly available information from the sources listed below.
